Ahoy! Attack of the Icebergs

Crikey! Did you see this? From what I understand, a mondo iceberg four times the size of Manhattan broke into pieces off the coast of Greenland last year, and now nearly a year later they are seeing it appear off the 'iceberg alley' shores of Newfoundland!

The top photo is a slice of ice that hit Newfoundland's Goose Cove temporarily blocking the harbor until it broke and melted a bit.

That largest iceberg piece? They call it 'Petermann's Ice Island' which NASA has been watching and it has yet to hit the shores. Pretty surreal, huh?! I am continually fascinated by the mighty nature and beauty of icebergs! (See previous post) You can see a video clip for the magnitude of Petermann's Ice Island here.

Mother of Beauty : Eva from Sycamore Street Press

Several months ago around Mother's Day I asked a few of my favorite creative online mothers to answer a few questions about motherhood. I am excited to share what Eva from Sycamore Street Press had to say! Her and her husband Kirk are super creative, talented and run the letterpress shop Sycamore Street Press in the beautiful mountainous valley in Heber City. They had a sweet baby girl, Ingrid back in November, recently launched their new letterpress collection, and are teaching letterpress classes with slots now open in September now too! I think Eva is such a cool and lovely person and I really enjoy what she had to share, hope you do as well...

    1. What is your favorite part of being a new mom? Is it different than you thought?

My life feels complete. When Ingrid came along, something just clicked. I love the small moments. Like when she finishes nursing and looks up at me and starts to coo. Or when I go to get her up from a nap and am greeted by the biggest crinkly nose grin ever. I could just melt. I suspected it would be like this, but I still couldn't have imagined how much joy one tiny human could give me!

    2. What is your daily schedule like now and how does blogging fit into that?

The first few months were like a marathon with unexpected twists and turns and an always receding finish line. But once she hit about 4 months, things calmed down and we were able to get on more of a schedule. It's been so nice! Ingrid wakes Kirk and I up every morning around 6:30 or so. I nurse her and we both play with her in bed for a little bit before we start the day. During her morning and afternoon naps, I try and get as much work done as possible. But often it feels like I am just getting started when she wakes up! While she's awake we play, read books, do housework, etc... And I take her and the dog on a walk down our country road, weather permitting. She goes to bed early -- about 5:30. When she does, I really get down to work. Lately, we've been really busy preparing for the launch of our 2011 collection, so I'll often be up until 11 or 12 editing images, writing descriptions, blogging, returning emails, etc... But of course, it can vary a lot from day to day! And I actually wrote an in depth "day in the life" post on my blog.

    3. How do you find or seek after balance with being a mom and running Sycamore Street Press?

It's tough. I can have a hard time focusing on the task at hand. When I'm caring for Ingrid, I'll sometimes try to answer a few emails (much to her consternation). But in the evening when I'm at the computer working, I'll end up opening iPhoto so I can look at all the pictures of her!

Overall, though, Ingrid has really helped me live a more balanced life. Before I had her, I was such a workaholic. These days I take more time to spend with family, friends, and in nature. Sure, I don't get as much work done for Sycamore Street Press as when I spent 12-18 hour days at the studio. But I'm starting to realize that in the grand scheme of life, it's a good thing!

Another big step for me in finding balance is to get help. Since SSP began, I've teamed up with my friends Amy Shaffer, Kristin Mills, and Stephanie Ford to create the designs for our letterpress goods. Then, a couple of years ago, Kirk joined me full time in printing and running the business. It's made all the difference. This summer, we're looking to bring on a couple of interns as well. As for the domestic side of things, once or twice a week one of Ingrid's grandmothers will come and watch her. And I've started having someone come in and clean our place for a couple of hours each week. I'm not gonna pretend that I do it all on my own. I feel so grateful for the help I have!

p.s. Have you seen this toast that Amy Poehler gave recently about how she's able to "do it all"?

    4. What qualities in your own mother and/or women around you do you admire most?

Love. First and foremost. The way they'll do whatever it takes to help their children and family. My mom has always been that way. Also -- even with 4 kids at home, she was still able to find some time for creative projects. Painting, knitting, gardening, cooking, decorating... I grew up seeing my mom do these things, and it definitely influenced who I am and what I do today.

    5. What is really inspiring you at the moment?

The resilience of the Japanese people. Instagram. Ingrid... and her mostly thrifted, gifted, or handed down wardrobe. Lykke Li. Our morning walks through the juniper tree forest. Spring, and all it's beautiful blossoms. Secrets from a Stylist. The fuss and flurry of launching a new collection. Pippi Longstocking. Miss Moss...

    Thanks so much Eva!

Speaking Digitally: 5 Best Apps for Time Management

This past weekend as my husband Mac and I went off to bike in the beautiful canyon, Mac turned the radio on to NPR in search of one of his favorite Saturday radio shows "Wait Wait Don't Tell Me". But instead, we were instantly transfixed by another segment discussing media theorist Marshall McLuhan and how digital media is shaping not only our lives, but also our perception of time. We were so intrigued by this topic that we actually got to our destination and sat while continually listening nodding our heads to the fact that what Douglas Coupland mentioned referring to this topic was spot on, "Hi, I'm your cell phone and I'm messing with your sense of time."

Have you ever stopped to wonder what happened to the last seven months? It is almost August and I don’t know where the time has gone! Is it the same way for you? Coupled with baby numero duo, (babies can seriously mess up your time reference) I am amazed at how we are in the midst of a serious fast-paced information evolution that is unfolding before our eyes! Exciting, but maybe a little frightening too? What do you think about this digital and social media heavy span that may be distorting our perception and reality of time? What do you think it will unfold for the future?

Ironically along the subject of time, the past several weeks I have been analyzing where my time is fleeing off to! I wanted to share with you a few of my favorite time management apps that I narrowed down to five, being either super functional and/or well-designed. Please share your favorite time management apps and tricks too, I am curious as to what you are using!

1: Wunderlist : I downloaded Wunderlist about a month or two ago for free. Currently it is my favorite to-do list of choice probably due to the fact that it is minimal, pretty and the best I’ve come across that works. Daily I enter all of my tasks sorting them into my personalized lists and it instantly syncs with my phone. There is an instant productivity feeling about checking (or.. clicking) off lists, huh?! Why I like it: It is simple, well-designed, functional and user-friendly. I've tried a gazillion to-do list apps and this program strikes the perfect balance and just works really for me. Why try? It is free! It is available for Apple gear, Android and Windows users so pretty much everyone can try it out if they would like.

2: Pomodoro Technique :The Pomodoro Technique is the classic tomato timer approach that has been around for over 30 years. I’ve been experimenting and revisiting the practice for the last few weeks. I create my to do-list (in Wunderlist) and then attack it in 25-30 minute sometimes 60 minute increments with an alarm (Since Pomodoro doesn’t have an official app, I use the PomodoroPro App on my phone, but you could easily just use a timer). Why I like it : It makes large tasks very manageable, it helps me put concrete limitations on things such as email time allotment, and work or household related tasks. It helps me focus better. Why try? It is free and a system that pretty much anyone can implement for even a day to see if it works for them.

3: Sleepyti.me bedtime calculator:Sleep especially since India arrived is usually on the back burner, but I am really working on getting better sleep because especially when you do without it for so long, you realize how many wonders a good night’s sleep really is! I love this little sleep website that calculates when you should wake up. It shares that a good night’s sleep consists of 5 or 6 complete sleep cycles. Simply plug in the time you desire to wake up or click the zzz button and it will help you wake up at the optimal hour to feel refreshed. Why I like it : It seems to make a bit of a difference in my morning grogginess levels, I don't feel as tired. Why try? It is a free website that I have bookmarked on my phone so if you don’t have a smartphone just go to the website.

4: Evernote is rad, are you a user? I am constantly working on organizing my incoming information and it helps me capture all of my ideas in one place, and bonus I can access it remotely!  I have used other similar programs in the past (and still do occasionally) but I am working on switching everything over. Why I like it : All of those desktop files, photos, clips can go in one place. I love that you have remote access, a big deal for me that is lacking in other programs I've tried. Why try? You can download it for free with a 60MB a month limit of stored information. There is a fee of $5 a month or $45 a year if you want to go premium which means you have 1 GB/mo.

5: Agenda : This is a sweet app that makes your iPhone calendar fancy. Why I like it : It is clean and simple with an old school paper calendar feel, and that it syncs seamlessly with my desktop gmail and iCalendar. Why try? If you want something different than the normal iCal app this is a great option. I believe it is $2.99. So far it is for iPhones only, sorry other phone users.

Remember to share your favorite time sharing solutions, I would love to hear about them!

Music Monday : Starsmith

This new song and video from Starsmith called "Lesson One" (The EP will be released on August 22nd) is upbeat with a bit of an chill electronica vibe, I like it. It is filmed in a beautiful location -- off the coast of England, such breathtaking scenery. Also there could be multiple meanings in the message, so I won't give it away, what do you think?

Flederhaus - An entire building of hammocks!

A genius idea that I thought only existed in my wildest imagination but then poof... there it is. I am loving this Flederhaus (translation - 'bat house') building in Vienna, Austria dedicated to hanging hammocks! From what I understand it is a free public space that anyone can come to hang out in the MQ Vorplatz near the Museums Quarter open daily 10:00-19:00 until October. Pretty much hammock paradise. Check out your pretty view of the surrounding buildings too. Would you kick back and take a break there?

A Mullet Skirt. At Safeway.

I almost forgot the best/worst fashion news of my week!  I saw an otherwise normal-looking woman wearing a mullet skirt yesterday.  At Safeway.  In the produce department.  Different colors than this pic, but otherwise, that's the skirt she was wearing.  While picking out her bananas.

A Letter to InStyle

    Dear InStyle,

I follow you on Twitter and often click your links to see who wore what to which event no one else knows about and which nail colors are hot that week/day/hour.  I appreciate the up-to-the-minute coverage of unattainable celebrity looks and overpriced skincare products.  You particularly excel in convincing me, while I stand in line at the grocery store, that I simply must have your latest print issue, even though I know that 100% of its content is available- for free- online.  With your colorful, glossy covers promising me better skin in an hour and that I will look more stylish in 30 seconds, I cannot help but succumb to your pages.

However, yesterday you posted a link to an article called "Vampire Girlfriends: Are You Like Bella, Elena, Sookie, or Buffy?"

So, um.  This is not a thing.  Which Vampire Girlfriend I am, that is.  It's not comparable to asking whether people have a classic, romantic, or edgy style, or whether we think Karl Lagerfeld has had botox.  It's just...not a thing.

Aside from the fact that I don't know who any of those chicks are (except Buffy, obviously), I am grossed out horrified a little concerned that you are telling women that they'd be good at being some vampire dude's gf.  Even if vampires existed (see: not a thing, above), they suck blood.  You know, to stay alive or powerful or whatever.  So that's gross.  And vaguely immoral.  And probably illegal.  Thus, a woman aspiring to date such a dude in real life, or even find out which such weirdo she'd be most compatible with, is disturbing.  Like Seek-Professional-Help disturbing, not I-Still-Like-Hello-Kitty disturbing.

And you are not only encouraging such weirdness, you are tweeting it to all 2,021,019 (at last count) of your followers.

I read your magazine and site for its content on clothes, makeup, and which celebrity wore some fugly dress better.  Not for strange, off the wall topics like this one.

Stick to what you do best, please.  All 2 million+ of us will thank you.

    Ellen S.

Speaking Digitally: Lion + Meeble Mail

Summer often seems to me like a time to shake things up, so here at Black Eiffel I am going to be bringing you some new regular features that I have been working on and am really excited about! My first new feature is called 'Speaking Digitally' where I will highlight and talk about my nerdy obsession with all things related to technology. Are you a tech-nerd too? Do speak up.

I guess you may understand a bit of my technology fascination when I tell you about what happened this morning. Quietly in the dark to not wake our girls, my husband and I huddled around our computer as we installed Lion early this morning. Are we geeks or what? Did you Mac users download it already today? I'm excited explore the new features and I am thrilled that the update is only 30 bones. Roar!

Another cool thing I recently learned about is Meeble Mail, which is an online website that helps you add a little fancy flair to your emails with their pretty designed stationery templates. It inserts directly into your many email clients like gmail, yahoo and more. Simply select and purchase your email stationery for around $4.99, customize it and you are off and you can use the stationery as much as you want. I dig that they have stationery designs from some of my favorite stationery designers like Jack and Lulu, Linda & Harriett as well as fashion designer's patterns.

Although I am partial to receiving an old school pretty letter in the snail mail, this is a perfect option to make your email stand out with style. Learn more about Meeble Mail here and check out all of the other fun stationery templates.

10ish Things You Must Own

It's been a long time since I posted about the items every woman absolutely must have in her closet.  Most lists are boring as hell and hardly capture the diversity of women and their needs.  Since most of these "must have" lists bug me, I usually create my own.

InStyle's latest list doesn't bug me, however.  It's actually updated for this year! And it includes animal print! And there's no white button down!  I recommend checking it out.

For the first time, I can get on board with 9 out of 10 items on such a list.  The one I disagree with?  An oversize watch.

Accessories, as I keep repeating OVER AND OVER, should be proportional to the person wearing them.  So, if you are a tiny person, have tiny wrists, or your frame generally gets overwhelmed by large peices, an oversize watch won't do you any favors.

I can get away with huge necklaces because of my stature, but because I have small wrists, large peices there just look silly.

Ladies, read these lists with a skeptical eye.  Be open-minded about trying new things, but if something doesn't work, move on.

Handbag of the Day: Leather & Bows

This sweet little number is $134.36 and is available on the Breast Cancer Awareness site.  Whenever you shop from this site, a portion of your purchase goes to help fund mammograms.  Buying this particular handbag funds 6% of a mammogram.  Also, there's $4.95 standard shipping and a free fold-away tote with the code BagItUp.  Not bad for such a cute bag that will go with everything.

Change Your Closet, Change Your Life

I have always been a proponent of the phrase "Change your shoes, change your life."  Not the deepest sentiment of all time, but one that makes sense.  Sometimes just changing one little thing can make everything seem so much better.  It follows (to me, anyway) that if you change your shoe STORAGE, you could change your life, too.  And damn, people, did I need it.

But my long wait is over!  I have a custom closet, complete with fabulous shoe storage.

    Before:

Sagging hanging bar, piles of unreachable shoes, chaos.

    After:

A place for everything, including my babies  preciouses shoes.  And I shall call her Yves.

I'd be lying if I told you that I didn't feel like this when it was installed:

    Aaahhh...

I am off to organize my clothes by color.  Wouldn't want the shoes to feel self-conscious.

Weekend Snaps + Inspiration is Everywhere

I hope you had a nice weekend, I am working on getting back into the groove. Here are some random snaps from the last few days. I always love coming across unique things that inspire me while traveling. Fluffy clouds, hand painted signs, quirky animal statues, and more.

For this trip I had to throw out my old trick book of traveling with one child, because traveling with two little ones (especially our spicy little red head) put a whole new swing on things for us, as I'm sure you well-experienced parents with 1+ kids know. A big hat tip to all you traveling families out there, I've got to come up with some new tricks!

    Happy Tuesday.
