It's A Jungle Out There: Safari Trend

As you can tell, the safari trend is all about natural nudes. Safari blends well with tribal, bright colors, however, which you can get a peek of in the image I took of the MARC sleeveless jacket.

This is the last post in the safari trend, focusing on the sleeveless safari jacket. This is a great summer piece because it is a light fabric and would be nice and cool.

I recommend pairing it with white shorts, I like these cuffed ones that are an appropriate length - do NOT wear short-shorts with these, please, I beg of you.

Belt the safari jacket to give it some shape, and wear a natural looking leather bracelet. I love this one from Juicy Couture with a hint of prep to it. Make your legs look great with high, natural colored espadrilles, and you are ready for the summer!

Jillian Tamaki

Today's favorite moment (besides snug-a-lugging with our girls) is when I clicked on a twitter link from Design Sponge + Jessica Hische and instantly became mesmerized by these stunning embroidered book cover designs for Penguin Books by Jillian Tamaki! They are gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous! Wouldn't you agree?! The titles, Emma, The Secret Garden and Black Beauty couldn't be more perfect either.

We will all have to wait a while to get our hands on these babies, sounds like November, but it is a dream to be able to see such talent and work in progress! Jillian's other work is incredible too, like this Monster Quilt --  Gasp! Beyond her apparent beautiful embroidery talents, she is a illustrator and comic artist who lives in Brooklyn and also teaches at the School of Visual Arts.

Spring Cleaning the Closet

I want to let you know about the Get Clean Sweepstakes, a really great prize awaits a lucky winner!

Laundry, laundry -- love it or hate . . . as for Monday, it is laundry day at our house. If clothes get dirty during the week, it has to wait its turn in the hamper until Monday comes again. This one day only system works for us and seriously gives me 'laundry peace of mind.'

Method sent me some laundry detergent and what I like about it is that the bottle is super small and smart so it really saves on space, it smells pretty darn good, and the concentrated formula works really well.

Here are a few of my other tips for how to organize the clothes once Monday gets them clean . . .  a few spring cleaning the closet tips you may enjoy:

For the last little while my closet has been in major transition (having a baby can do that). Until I get back to my goal, I am motivating myself by not buying any new clothes, and rebuilding my wardrobe in a way that I am excited about.

1: Dress like a French woman and seek after high quality items that will enhance your overall wardrobe, don't get wrapped up in purchasing quantity and those throw-away pieces. You know the ones I'm talking about, right? Have you heard that we only wear 20% of our clothes 80% of the time? Make that 20% the best!

2: Edit through your closet seasonally and filter out things that you haven't worn. If you live in a place where your climate doesn't vary that much, you can probably do this less. Also organize your clothes in a way that works for you -- by color, type, season etc...

3: Have matching hangers, it makes all of the difference and makes your closet look nice and uniform.

4: Organize your shoes. Keep shoes off the ground and find a organizer that appeals to you. A simple shoe rack, a back of the door wonder whatever works in your space. It will feel nice, make things much easier to access, and let you see at one quick glance everything available.

5: Get storage containers that match whether in your drawers or to store seasonal clothing items and accessories -- to give your space uniformity. They create instant boundaries and help limit overall stuff consumption. If it doesn't fit in your closet or storage bins, don't buy it or rotate something else out. Also a little secret of mine is that I always try to have an empty storage bin handy for backup in those quick pick up moments, like when a last minute visitor stops by.

Tell me readers, what are your laundry and spring cleaning out your closets tips? I would absolutely love to hear about them!

*Method provided the laundry soap, which is already our first choice. This post is sponsored by Martha Stewart and Method, but these opinions and tips are how I really roll.

Spring Wardrobe: Colorful Dresses & How to Wear Them

Bright, vibrant dresses are in and are so much fun.  A lot of people are afraid of bright colors because they don't know what to wear them with.  Here are a few ways to wear your colorful dresses without freaking out about how to coordinate them with other pieces.

    1. Bright dress + neutral shoes + neutral jacket/sweater

This is the easiest way to wear a colorful dress.  Start with the dress (this is the Tucker Panel Dress)...

Add shoes (these are the Stuart Weitzman Sashay pumps)...

Throw on your completer piece (this is the Banana Republic Textured Ruffle Jacket)...

Your jewelry, scarves, and belts can be similarly neutral- wooden beads or metallic pieces work well.

    2. Bright printed dress + matching bright shoe + neutral jacket/sweater

This is a slightly bolder- and more fun- way to wear color, but it works best with a print.  Exact matching of your shoes to your clothes very often looks dated and matronly (or, weird as it seems, juvenile), so to avoid looking dowdy or just ill-informed, don't match your shoes to your solid colored bright dresses.  On the other hand, picking up a color in a printed dress is a great way to add even more color to an outfit.

Start with the printed dress (this is another Tucker dress)...

Add shoes (this is the Auri Footwear Layla sandal)...

Throw on the neutral jacket/sweater (this is the Banana Republic Ruffled Military Jacket)...

Jewelry, scarves, and belts can be equally colorful, when done the same way- not matchy, but picking up a color in the print.  In this case, I might add something orange, like a cocktail ring, to pick up the orange detail in the dress.

    3. Bright dress + contrasting shoe + complimentary jacket/sweater

This is some of the boldest way to wear color, but it doesn't have to be scary. Employ a little color theory and you can wear an even more creative outfit.  I do not profess to understand the intricacies of color theory, but knowing a couple of simple ideas could expand your horizons, wardrobe-speaking.

Let's start with the Rachel Pally Goddess Dress in teal (it's only $110 and on my wish list):

Find the dress color on the color wheel: blue-green.  Check out the colors on the other half of the color wheel, the same distance from the center: yellow, yellow-orange, orange, etc.  Those are your shoe colors.

Add a contrasting shoe (these are from BC Footwear)...
Find the dress color on the color wheel again. Check out the colors next to it, the same distance from the center: blue and green.  Those are your completer piece colors.

Throw on a complimentary jacket/sweater (this one is from Old Navy)...

Let's try this with another dress, in a more muted palette:

Start with the dress (this is the Kimchi Blue Flutter Sleeve Dress at Urban)...

Find the color on the color wheel: Pink.  Check out the colors opposite it, but which are the same distance from the center: Mint, Powder Blue, Lemon.  Those are your shoe colors.

Add shoes (these are Sam Edelman oxfords)...
Find the dress color on the color wheel again.  Check out the colors next to it, also the same distance from the center: salmon and lilac/lavender/orchid.  Those are your completer piece colors.

Throw on a jacket/sweater (this is the Banana Long Sleeve Open cardi)...

Jewelry, scarves, and belts can be equally colorful or neutral, depending on your comfort level.

Some women put colors together like this instinctively, but relying on tools like the color wheel is a fine way to navigate wearing multiple colors.  It's a modern, fun way to put outfits together. And yes, this formula works with prints, as well as solids.

    4. Colorful dress + same color, different shade jacket/sweater + neutral shoe

A subtler version of #3, this is a fairly sophisticated take on wearing color, and one I try to use often.

Start with a dress in a color you love (this is the an Ellen Tracy cowl neck knit dress in vibrant red)...

Find the color on the color wheel: red.  Check out what is on either side of it, the same distance from the center AND what is in it's section of the "pie": red-violet, red-orange, pink, and maroon.  Those are your completer piece colors.  In this case, try to stick with tones that match that of the dress (if you are wearing a bold red, find an equally bold pink and keep the pastels for something else).

Add a jacket or sweater (this is the Banana Cashmere Ruffle Edge Cardi)...

Grab some neutral shoes (this is the Nine West Rocha pump in taupe)...

I like neutral accessories with this look, but you can spice things up with some contrasting colors in a similar tone, like cobalt blue or yellow.

And now, my lovely readers, go forth and wear dresses!

Outfit of the Day: fLocking Friday

Outfit Details: Top: Kate Spade; Pants: Banana; Shoes: Seychelles, Belt: Anthro; Sunglasses: Kate Spade

Dress it up: add cocktail ring and long necklace, switch shoes for something higher and more colorful (maybe pink or red?)

Dress it down: lose the belt, switch heels for flats

I waited for this top to go on sale and then snagged it!  Blue birds on a white backdrop? Yes please.  The belt is the Curves and Lines Belt at Anthro.  I love it because it's super neutral and very wide, so I HAVE to have a waist in it.

I'll be back to frocking next Friday!

It's A Jungle Out There: Safari Trend

I am obsessed with this skirt from Jones New York. I saw it in a magazine and thought, "so cute!" then saw the price and thought, "DONE!" It is a great piece for the price. Pencil skirts are very flattering, and honestly, $99 is about how much I am willing to spend on a passing trend. So once I saw this skirt my next thought was, of course, what do I wear this with?

I would wear it with a great swingy, boxy sweater. Whenever I do tight on one part of the body (like with this pencil skirt) I like to go loose on the other part (boxy sweater). It is flattering and appropriate. I love this light sweather in a matching neutral from MICHAEL Michael Kors. I can also see that sweater with white shorts or jeans. Underneath the sweater wear a simple white tank underpiece.

Wear some great accessories with this, like a wooden bead necklace - love the one glittery accent - and snakeskin shoes that don't have a pattern, just a texture, in basic nude. You're ready for the urban or corporate jungle.

It's A Jungle Out There: Safari Trend

Boy, oh boy. I have been SUCH a slacker on this. These last four weeks have been the busiest of my life. Between extra-curricular activities, midterms and day-to-day school work and life, the blog has DEFINITELY been the thing that I let slip. Well, here is my return to the blogging scene. And it is starting with a major trend we are seeing for spring/summer: safari! Here is a way to wear a safari print short:

Safari printed shorts are super cute and fun. I love the little pleat at the top of the short that gives them a bit more volume - more flattering to the non-model sizes.

Wear a basic tee on top, black would work, but I quite like this bone color to play off the browns and peaches in the shorts.

There is some great tribal and safari inspired jewelry out there right now, and I could not be more obsessed with this necklace. I love the mix of the metal and wood links with the stones - it is so cool and mixed media. I also love this color and theme complementing bangle.

Finally, subtly mix prints with these snakeskin sandals. The small print on the shoe won't pick up as clashing with the shorts, so embrace the mix.

Gardens of Marqueyssac

Daydreaming of a vacation right about now... A few summers ago I was in the Dordogne region and had the opportunity to tour the stunning Gardens of Marqueyssac with my friend Stephanie. Unfortunately I lost my photos of this dazzling and magical place --but we saw peacocks on the rooftops, listened to various little French musical groups play throughout the gardens and we both seriously weathered the thunderstorm of our lives, it was one of my favorite French experiences! Are you going on a vacation or holiday this year? What has been your most memorable vacation moment/place? We are brainstorming for ideas to put on our list ...

These two little girls melt my heart, and make me laugh every single day. Sometimes I wonder how time slips away from me so fast and I get behind on things, but then I remember what is most important in life, and it is them. I wish I could freeze frame and slow the clock down. Hip, hip hooray for babies, little kids, and for an amazing husband too.

Method

I am excited to be working with Martha Stewart LivingOmnimedia for the next several weeks highlighting one of my favorite brandsMethod. First up I want to let you know about the Get Clean Sweepstakes! Be sure to check that out.

I use Method cleaning supplies all the time in our home -- I am apretty much a super fan, and with some major Spring Cleaning beginning aroundour home, this is right up my alley! What I especially like about Methodproducts is they are non-toxic, and natural, but still work very effectivelyand come in pretty designed and eco-minimal packages. Are you a fan too?

As I share my thoughts about Method products I will also sharesome of my Spring Cleaning tips and first up I am going to explore the kitchen.Method recently sent me the above yummy smelling Clementine Dish Soap that isincredible – the smells is utterly addictive and it may sound crazy but it reallymakes me want to do the dishes. I love the sweet citrus smell! All of theirproducts I've tried smell amazing which makes Spring Cleaning much more enjoyable.

Speaking of dishes, when it comes to dishes I am reallygoing through a purging phase right now. I am working on pairing down what wedon’t need or use. I’ve conquered the cupboard above and I’m off to set the restin order. I’ve been using the Method multi-purpose spray as I goto wipe down the cabinets, which pretty much makes everything smell likeheaven.

Tip 1 : Figure out what your needs are and eliminatewhat you don’t use or like. When organizing match like items together with amplespace around them for easy access and organization.

A while back we got rid of all of our unsharp knives afterwe saved for months to upgrade to a few really great knives. Ithas made all of the difference and chopping, slicing and dicing much more enjoyable.

Tip 2 : Discard unsafe knives (dull ones aredangerous!) and broken appliances, and save to upgrade to kitchen tools thatyou will use and last for a lifetime. Keep knives sharp by having themprofessionally sharpened once a year, and don’t put them in the dishwasher orleave them in the sink!

There is a tiny hidden wall in our kitchen where I put upcork squares and pin up rotating food ideas or articles that inspire me. Thevisuals help steer our choices in a better direction. As you can see from the current board above, right now we are really focusing on eating healthier in our family, although I do miss seeing photos of delicious desserts!

Tip 3 : Be inspired while in your kitchen – Have aplace where you can see visual reminders of what types of things you want towant to eat. It can be on a wall, on the back of a cupboard, whatever worksbest in your space.

While going through our cabinets I have came across my little problem of loving books too much –especially well-designed and pretty photographed cookbooks so it is hard not tokeep adding to them. I’m in the process of going through all of the pretty onesthat aren’t dogeared to see what recipes I really want to cook. Furthermore, it is even getting more tricky to focus with all of the pretty cooking apps for the iPad theyare coming out with… have you seen Everday Food?! Gorgeous! (I will have to doa post on that.)

Tip 4 : Utilize what you already have before adding more.Set your limits and define the space it will take up, when you purchase something, pass on another.

My final tip is my black book of recipes. I’ve tried manythings … computer programs, recipe cards, custom recipe books, apps and more. What Ikeep coming back to and what works best for me is to the print off, clip andtype recipes, and put them into a binder with plastic pages. I have tabscategorizing sections like entrees, salads, soups and more and it is a snap to quicklyfind what favorites I want to make. When I meal plan for the week I just go through andtake out the recipes I’m going to use, write down the ingredients I need andput them in the front of the binder for easy access during the week. The plastic pages have also saved me from many spills.

Tip 5: Organize and collect your favorite andwell-used recipes in one place so they are easy to access when cooking in thekitchen.

So there you have it… my five Spring Cleaning tips for thekitchen! What are some of your tips? I would love to hear about them in thecomments! Favorite recipes, cookbooks shout those out too. Also what are your favorite cleaning supplies in the kitchen -- do you seek after the good smells like me?

*As a heads up, Method sent me the dish soap for review andI really love it. This post is sponsored by Martha Stewart and Method, but these opinions are my own -- you should see my Method Cleaning Arsenal before they even approached me.
