Smoothies

This last year or so I've been hung up on trying different smoothie recipes and green drinks, so when the January issue of Whole Living came in the mail the cover instantly resonated with me and I discovered 25 great recipes from their website that are helping me mix it up. I've tried a few and I can't wait to try more, today I made the Banana-Peanut Butter but switched out milk for almond milk. I am a big almond milk fan, have you tried it? What is your favorite smoothie / drink recipe?

(individual photos from Whole Living; collaged by B*E - Aren't the smoothie colors fun?!)

Music Monday : Keren Ann

I've been a Keren Ann fan for quite some time, so I am thrilled to hear about her new album coming out and to see a new video release for her single called, "My Name is Trouble". She is both Dutch and Israeli and also spent some time growing up in France so her interesting multicultural background I believe heavily influences her cool musical style. Her new album comes out in Europe at the end of February and the U.S. soon thereafter where she will also be touring. If you are new to her sound, you should check out her other music, it is really great! I posted about her previously here (wow-- it was over 3 years ago). Happy Music Monday. What do you think?

Check out her collection of albums or see what she has on itunes.-- (these links support B*E).

Style to Steal: Martha Streck

Could her hair look any more awesome underneath that hat? I love the texture. My favorite elements of this outfit are the details. For example, how she is wearing sheer dot tights under her cuffed boyfriend jeans.

Or, how her booties are essentially lace-ups - you can see them looping in and out - but done with leather instead of fabric shoelaces. I also love her retro sunglasses and I have wanted a pair like that for quite a while.

When I head to New York in  two weeks I will definitely be recreating this look. Here is an inexpensive way to nab her great outfit:

Bubbles in Paris

I'm pretty obsessed with these photographs by Melvin Sokolsky, aren't they are incredible?! What makes them even more special is that they were taken in Paris in 1963 when there wasn't Zorbs or computers to do photo alterations. Looks like all crane and pulley systems used here! These shots call for new use of my recently made-up word ... 'j'mazing'! Have you ever put two words together on accident creating a new one? What do you think of these shots? See more here. How to Mix Prints

Mixing floral prints can look great - but also like Bozo the Clown. Here are the keys: keep them in the same color palette, and vary the size of the floral print.

Like the above - a light blue cardigan and a navy skirt, where the cardigan has a very small print and the skirt is a bigger and more abstract print.

For the skirt, I don't love the black belt with it, so I would remove it and wear a cream one to compliment the other colors better. Over the cardigan wear a dark gray, or in this case what Madewell calls "heathered blacktop," blazer.

And the shoes should compliment the palette of the entire outfit. I got so lucky finding these! Gray with blue color-blocking - the perfect colors. Now go and mix some prints with ease!

How to Mix Prints

Yesterday I suggested mixing stripes, but you can certainly get bolder with more artistic prints. Whereas the key with stripes was different width, the key with artistic prints is color. Keep one half of the outfit in a neutral - gray, black, white, you get the idea - like this skirt. I love the plaid print with lines that look as if they've been drawn in chalk!

The other half can be a fun rich color like this awesome ink-blot top in gorgeous orange and navy with hints of pink. The rest of the outfit should be plain and simple - opaque black tights and black booties will do the trick with this fuller skirt.

Healthy Grilled Cheese

Since I am on the losing weight bandwagon after having our baby, the people at Weight Watchers sent me some cheeses and asked if I could come up with some recipes. Last time I shared a new favorite low calorie snack (see here) and today it is a cold snowy day, so a grilled cheese sandwich and tomato soup fit the ticket. Instead of over indulging on calories which is easy to do during the winter, Weight Watchers is a good choice for nice flavor without a lot of calories. Today I tried the Mexican Style blend on some whole wheat bread and put in right into the panini grill. The Mexican cheese is made from 2% milk was 80 calories for 1/3 cup so you really can't go too wrong. It was yummy! What do you put on your grilled cheese sandwich?

How to Mix Prints

A great way to start mixing prints is by mixing your stripes. Do this by mixing the width of your stripes - like in the above example - with a thick striped sweater and a thin striped scarf. You can also mix a thick striped cardigan with a thin striped tank top. Just make sure you have one of each. Wear a basic tank underneath the sweater, gray denim, black leather riding boots, and an open black blazer thrown on for some warmth.

Music Monday : Agnes Obel

Searching for some fresh music this morning I came across Danish Singer/Songwriter Agnes Obel for the very first time. Her music is beautiful! I love the sound of soft piano with a pretty voice and she delivers with her lyrics being equally as lovely...

    "Black turns beamy bright
    Turning on the light
Today is gonna be the day
    You hear somebody say
    We need you wide awake"

She recently released her first album, "Philharmonics" in October or 2010. Another track and video -- Riverside is also quite stunning. Both of these pieces are little works of art, really. Give her music a listen and tell me what you think. Happy Music Monday!

You can find the album on itunes. (this link supports B*E)

Style to Steal: Alana Zimmer

Alana Zimmer has walked for basically everyone. From Alexander McQueen and Louis Vuitton to Banana Republic and Lanvin for H&M. And not only does she rock amazing outfits on the runway, but she shows great personal style off the runway. Here is your way to steal her great style.

You can't really tell what she is wearing underneath that great double-breasted coat, so I've put this outfit with a white tunic top. If you're going to wear skinny leather pants, or what I've featured here as an inexpensive alternative - the American Apparel nylon tricot legging - I beg of you, wear something on top that covers your butt. It just looks more appropriate.

For the coat, look for a double-breasted one with menswear tailoring. Like I said, wear a long white tunic top, and a printed scarf like this fun one from Topshop. Wear short flat boots like these from Sam Edelman, black leather gloves, and carry a black quilted bag with a long gold chain to imitate Zimmer's style.

How to Look Good in Layers

This is the outfit I have essentially been living in lately - with minor variations. Basic white v-necks are my wardrobe staples. Specifically, ones from Madewell with a great boyfriend fit. The day that I heard they had been discontinued was a very sad time for me.

For warmth, wear a cozy and cute cashmere zip-up. It may mean paying a little more to get legitimate cashmere, but it will absolutely keep you warmer and it is worth it! Over the zip-up, wear a preppy blazer, which will take the outfit in a more structured and chic direction instead of just basic and casual.

Wear a fun scarf in a pretty color and your favorite skinny jeans - as you all know, mine are "The Stilt" by AG - and a riding boot - my Frye's are my favorite pair that I wear everywhere. In terms of jewelry, I've been wearing a big cuff and a cocktail ring.

Favorite Local Food Spots in Salt Lake City

Since there are lots of people coming into town for Alt this week (yay!!) I thought I would highlight my ten favorite foodie places around the Salt Lake City area for those looking for a place to try. Although I'm not originally from Utah and still have many places yet to give a go, these are ones I thought of off the top of my head, and have always come away with memorable experiences. See my entire list and map after the jump...

Forage : My favorite restaurant in Salt Lake hands down. Mac took me here a few weeks ago again for my birthday and it is an overall artistic and enjoyable food experience. If you are a foodie this is a must! It is a smaller place and only open for dinner, a little spendy but you will come away with a very memorable evening. They are taking away numerous awards lately including one of the top restaurants in the U.S.

Les Madeleines : My favorite Bakery! Their specialty Kouing-aman is amazing and sells out fast! It was even highlight on the Food Network. The Carrot Cake Cookie is yummy as well and pretty much everything else. For lunch I enjoy their Sesame Chicken Salad Wrap.

Cucina Toscana : I haven't been to them all but this is my favorite Italian spot in the area. So delicious and the service in impeccable.

Tulie Bakery : Patterned after Tartine in San Francisco this Bakery has more of a modern and minimal fresh and European atmosphere and the yummy bakery items are top notch. I enjoy their Banana Creme Tarts but most things are delectable!

Mazza : If you are wanting something a little different to try-- go for the Middle Eastern cuisine of Mazza. There are two locations and it is really yummy food.

Porcupine Grill : If you like pub food this place is pretty good and a perfect after ski hangout.

Lone Star Taqueria: Quick authentic Mexican food. Their fish tacos and salad are amazing with new fresh fish selections daily, I also often see many skiers and boarders here after hitting the slopes.

Red Iguana Restaurant : Best Mexican food in Utah! There is also a few different locations.

Takashi : Some of the best sushi in town.

Pawit's Royale Thai : Best Thai food I've ever had in Utah. The Gang Kra Lee (Yellow Curry) is really good.

If you end up heading south of Salt Lake City to Utah County here are two other favorites :

Pizzeria 712 : Yummy Pizza, their ham & cheddar panini is incredible and the desserts are yummy too. Although an interesting location, I love the atmosphere.

Communal Restaurant: Delicious food and they are now open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Worth a trip for sure with a great designer ambience.

I know I am missing many great spots as I am only limiting this to ten, but add to the list -- what are your favorites? Shout them out in the comments!

How to Look Good in Layers

Denim jackets are tricky. They can look pretty tacky, but I am actually a big fan and I think they can look really cute. Especially over stripes. It gives a nautical / Americana impression.

So to stay warm this winter, wear a striped sweater as your base. Put on a denim jacket, and then a puffer coat. I recommend trying on a puffer coat before you commit to the purchase. They can make you look HUGE. However, they are exceptionally warm and if the puffs (is that the right word?) are the right size, I think a puffer can look quite stylish.

Wear a red circle scarf to keep your neck warm - the picture of this scarf looks very tomato-y but it's not like that in reality which is a good thing. A deeper red looks better with classic nautical stripes. I mean, you don't want to look like an American flag.

Finally, wear skinny black pants and a black riding boot to polish off the look in a classic and simple way.

How to Look Good in Layers

I am blogging this as I watch the Golden Globes where the actors are discussing the 80 degree heat in LA. That sounds pretty good right now seeing as I just spent three days in 22 degree NYC and am now in Nashville where temps are around 40. So I can't really visualize myself in a stunning hot pink Calvin Klein - here's looking at you Claire Danes.

What I'm wearing is layers of cashmere, jackets, coats and scarves. The tricky thing about layering is that it is easy to look bulky. And who wants that? Therefore, layering should be considered carefully and pieces picked specifically. Here is an outfit that will keep you warm while still being body flattering.

When layering, try and mix pieces that don't add bulk to the same body parts. I'm not sure that makes perfect sense so let me explain. Instead of wearing a thick sweater under a coat, wear a cropped faux fur vest. A thick sweater under a coat will double the bulk on your arms and could look very thick.

Therefore, wearing a faux fur vest keeps your upper body warm and the coat keeps your arms warm. Wear a blouse underneath - I like this one in a simple black and white stripe. On the bottom, wear classic black slacks, a simple belt and feminine flats to contrast the menswear coat. You'll be warm and stylish!

What's the Diff? Flats Edition

This is the Marais Maryjane Bow Flat.  It's $96 at Moxsie.

This is the Frenchi City of Love Ballerina flat.  It's $96 at Anthropologie. According to the site, these are an "online exclusive."

What's the diff, you ask?  There isn't one- it's the EXACT SAME SHOE.

Which one would I choose?  The pair from Moxsie, hands down.  Because I can often get a 10-20% discount at Moxsie (they run promotions often), they always have free shipping and free returns, and Marais USA is nicer, more respected brand.  Sorry, Anthro- your "online exclusive" is only excluding your in-store customers.  People can buy the same thing elsewhere for less and with better service.

Top Five Friday : Favorites Of The Week

Here are my top five favorite things I saw this week. I'm totally bonkers over this DJ light installation. The future is ahead of us with more interactive technology. Watch the clip here.

How rad is that polaroid iPhone decal? Did you hear about the sweet news that Pioneers of American Industrial Design stamps are headed our way? I agree with Suann, the USPS is stepping it up lately in the stamp dept. Yee-haw. Also, I've been seeing this uplifting poster floating around the web -- it is designed by Francesca Ramos and she is offering it as a free download on her website. Very cool.

Am I the last one to see this T-Mobile Welcome Back clip? Another flash mob I know, but it is still awesome. What would you think if you came off a plane home to that? I love the people's surprised faces.

Have an excellent weekend full of light and love my friends!

A new low calorie snack...

    weight watchers

As I am working on slimming down this extra baby weight by being not only more health conscious but calorie conscious, I am on the hunt for low calorie snacks that taste good. In the past I have been a big fan of Laughing Cow Cheese wedges and crackers for a snack, so when Weight Watchers wanted to send me their new spreadable wedges in different flavors I was game to try them out. My favorite flavored wedge so far is the Jalapeno Pepper, it tastes like creamy pepperjack and for only 30 calories it is something that you can spread on anything from crackers to apples and feel great about it. What is your favorite healthy or low calorie snack?

Zodiac Change

Have you heard all of the hullabaloo about the new Zodiac signs today? What did you change to? Do you consider it hogwash or are you disappointed? I switched from a Capricorn to a Sagittarius and eh it doesn't really phase me, but boy am I fascinated by the cosmos.

Recently I came across this whimsical and stunning photographic fashion spread in December's 2010 British Vogue representing the twelve signs of the zodiac and thought it would particularly suit today. The photographs are by Tim Gutt, and you can see the whole collection of photos from the series here. Very beautiful! I also did a round up of some Zodiac inspired items that you may enjoy over here.
