Have a great weekend!

It was a crazy week for us with sickies around our house, a canceled birthday party, lots of work projects, and more. All that is behind now (well, almost) and I am really excited for the weekend because we are headed to San Francisco.

Here are a few things that made me happy this week:

*V in her costume for a party
*The fall foliage (shot taken in Park City)
*Some tasty pumpkin whoopie pies I made from this book but you can also find the recipe here.
    * I also liked this quote by Mallika Chopra in this month's Whole Living magazine:

"Set the intention to make someone else happy -- and cause a ripple effect for positive change in our world."

What are your plans for the Halloween/Autumn weekend? You can follow what we are up to in San Francisco on twitter if you want. Have a good one everyone!

Pellegrino meets Missoni

    Pellegrino meets Missoni

A little while ago a friend and I had dinner at Cucina Toscana an amazing Salt Lake City Italian Restaurant that I would highly recommend, and when they brought us a bottle of Pellegrino we immediately both noticed that the label was a little different. It is Pellegrino meets Missoni! So, what would any label-loving design geek do? I asked for the bottle after we were through of course! Isn't it beautiful? Anybody else seeing these limited edition beauties floating around?

The New Boots: A Guide

    It's boots season, people.

Once more, with feeling:  It's BOOTS SEASON, people.  Woot.

There a several new boot styles permeating the collective fashion consciousness (and by "new", I mean SOMEone has seen it all before).  Here are my thoughts.

    1. Clog boots

In a word: hideous.  I hate clogs.  I'm also not typically a fan of mixing several trends together in one outfit, let alone one piece.  This boot combines the lace-up trend, faux fur trend, and the clog trend to make a very busy shoe with no seasonal longevity.  These will be "in" for exactly 2 months.  And it's fugly as sin.

    2.  Belted boots

I think this style can be worked into a lot of wardrobes.  I'm not likely to buy a pair myself, because I can't get over the sneaking suspicion that it looks like the boot's belt is slipping off, creating a messing, unfinished vibe.  I recommend staying away from any pair that mixes this trend with another, though.  Run, do not walk, from any pair that uses faux fur or laces along with the belt.

    3. Cuffed boots

These are cuffed at the bottom of boot, and in some cases the cuff almost hits the floor.  I'm not a huge fan, though I think some pairs are better executed than others.  I prefer the ones whose cuffs fall above the heel, a la:

The boots whose cuffs fall lower, much like a pair of too-long pants, can actually cut off the leg line and make you look shorter- and sloppy.

    4. Buckled boots

Um, are you kidding me? Ladies, if you want to look like a cheap hooker, surely there are easier, less ankle-breaking options available.  (Don't worry, this pair also comes in street walker blue blue.)

This is an extreme example, but there are so many right now that over 3 or more buckles and they all look cheap to me, no matter what the actual price.  This is the same rule for cookies that my mom taught me: just have one or two.

    5. Moto boots

Yep, they are supposed to be- or just look like- biker boots.  And they are awesome.  The pair above are classics, and look tough and chic right now.  Depending on the outfit, they can look as bad-ass or as funky as you want.  They are actually really versatile for a lot of wardrobes.

These are the ones I'm eyeing:

I would wear them with pretty much everything, including skirts and dresses.

Got a boots question? Throw it in the comments.  Maybe I'll even have an answer.

Alain Delorme

Here is a fascinating conceptual photography project by French photographer Alain Delorme called 'Totems'. Although exaggerated for effect, this is amazing to think about, no? How many of you have seen people carrying extremely large loads? I have -- and it is quite humbling. It makes me think in a different perspective. See more photographs here.

    From his website it states:

"The new Totems series by Alain Delorme plunges us into the core of contemporary China and its complexity. Under the blue sky of a highly colored Shanghai, men carry throughout the city unbelievable piles. These precarious columns made of cardboard or chairs appear as new totems of a society in complete transformation, both a factory for the world and a new El Dorado of the market economy." Oh, yeah. There was a wedding.

I suppose you want to see pictures?  I will break my usual rule of not posting pics of me without  sunglasses once I get the professional pics in or I get some SUPER cute ones from friends.  Attention friends: Hint, freaking hint.

In the meantime, here's what I wore:

    THE DRESS:

Her name is Hayden (yes, at Priscilla of Boston, all the dresses have names and are referred to as "her"). Better pics here.

    The shoes:

They are the Kate Spade Abbie.  The shoes were the hardest part for me.  In the end, I ordered 6 pairs, tried on the dress with 4 of them, and these were the clear winners.  I wasn't always sold on the idea of flats, but after being in them for 6 hours straight, I was relived I didn't go with the runners up:

    The Kate Spade Elate:

    And the Cole Haan Ceci:

    The jewelry:

Kate Spade was good to me...this is the Crystal Constellation Bracelet:

And this is NOT the necklace, but is so astonishingly close, I'm posting it anyway.  The real deal will show up in the wedding pics, I promise:

Hair, makeup, and nails were done, coiffed, touched up, and suitably me.  I swear I'll post the real deal soon.

Shop This Place: NYLightMetals

NYLightMetals is an Etsy shop I discovered while browsing the interwebs during a bout of insomnia. The premise of the shop is basically awesome pieces at affordable prices. Nothing is over $100 and a ton of pieces are under $50. Best of all, it's all fun, interesting, and pretty stuff - I had a REALLY hard time not buying out the store.

    Here are some faves:

The Geometric Bohemian Ring (which I may or may not have already snatched up):

    The Clover Leaf necklaces:

    The sweet vintage geometric earrings:

And the liquid mesh bracelets: (which I may or may not have HAD to have at 5:00 am)

I could go on and on.  So, I hope the ladies who receive gifts from me like this stuff, because this place is on the shopping list from now on.

Inspiration Board

I like this simple idea of putting an inspiration board in a form of a shape like this house on the wall. It makes inspiration seem more like an art piece, don't you think? The shape possibilities are endless... do you have ideas of what other shapes would look good?

Talking Water

This creative PSA and installation in Paris has to be one of the most ingenious ways to get a message across I've seen in quite a while. I was surprised to see the final answer -- were you? What a difficult world problem to conquer.

Style to Steal: Karolina Kurkova

Karolina Kurkova is definitely my model girl-crush. She has an amazing body that can both rock the Victoria's Secret runway and the runways in Milan. She also has an incredibly classic and flattering personal style that I respond to. As you can see here she has a mastery of proportions, neatly pairing a slouchy black tee with a cropped blazer. And instead of letting the scarf flow free around her, obscuring her fabulous outfit, she has tucked the ends into the scarf around her neck making an eternity scarf. This image captures a look of hers that I would steal right off her back, skinny jeans, black tee, blazer, and scarf. Totally love. Here are some items for your to steal her look as well.

Kate Spade Books

    kate spade books

Have you seen these fun new short stories from Kate Spade in collaboration with Strand -- how cute are they? They had seven writers incorporate the phrase, "she is quick and curious and playful and strong" at some point in their story. They've been added to my wish list for sure.

Style to Steal: Theres Alexandersson

Finally, back to blogging. It's been a long two weeks of midterms for us here at college, so I apologize for my shift in focus away from the blog towards my huge pile of school work. A lot has happened in the fashion world in the last month - and by "a lot" I mean NY, Milan, and Paris Fashion Weeks! I have always loved seeing models' street style. As they are all forced to have their hair done, make-up done and clothes worn in a certain way for a show, often to all look the same, it is refreshing to see them in their natural go-to styles. The girl I would like to point out today is Theres Alexandersson, a newcomer to the international runway scene. But it looks like she has some staying power as she wore three looks in the Calvin Klein show in NY, and later she walked in Dolce and Gabbana and Jil Sander in Milan and Chloe and Lanvin (two of my personal favorites) in Paris. And exiting Jil Sander, she was caught in an adorable fall floral dress appropriately layered with opaque tights, a buttery leather jacket, and a scarf - a perfectly put together fall look. Here's how to capture Theres' fall style.

Music Monday : Brooke Fraser

    Brooke Fraser

Kirsten from Simply Grove was kind enough to sent me a tweet about New Zealand singer-songwriter Brooke Fraser's new album "Flags". I have yet to listen to the album but I like how on her website they describe her music as the kind "that sounds like a pop marshmallow has dropped into a folk hot chocolate and become a warm, spicy chocolatey broth." Have a listen and see if you agree.

I like the video above-- 'Something in the Water', thanks again Kirsten for the heads up. Happy Music Monday everyone!

RECIPE: HOMEMADE BROWNIES

For years I subscribed to the theory that you simply cannot make brownies from scratch that are as good as those from the box. It's true and I’m absolutely ashamed to admit it. Then, thankfully, one day I woke up. Realizing that everything is better from scratch than from a box (really, who was I kidding?), I started to search for the perfect brownie recipe, one that would blow that box out of the water. This one has been my go-to for a few years now.

    homemade brownies
    homemade brownies
    homemade brownies

It’s rich and decadent with that perfect delicately crisp top layer. I’ve made it both with walnuts and without and it’s divine either way (personally, I like nuts so we add them whenever they’re on hand; the toasted flavor pushes it over the edge into nirvana).

Be sure to have cold milk on hand. You’re going to need it.
